Independent Work Experience Module

>> Tuesday, April 07, 2009

Introduction
The Independent Work Experience (IWE) modules enable students to experience the world of work, and to develop their personal and employability skills, whilst gaining credit towards their degree.

Students undertake a placement of between 50 and 80 hours long, attend a flexible programme of workshops and tutorials, and complete the module assignments.

What kind of work experience do students need for the module?
It may be a requirement to link your work experience to your programme of study.
Work experience has been undertaken in a range of situations, including:

Local veterinary surgery

- Supermarket work
- Large national accountancy firm
- Community Action volunteering
- High Street retailers
- PR work for advertising agency
- Physiotherapy department in a hospital
- Primary and secondary schools
- Graphic design
- Kids' camp
- Lifeguard at a Fitness Centre

among many others!

How much credit is the module worth?

The IWE modules are offered with 10, 15, 20 or 30 credits, at Level 2, in order to accommodate different Schools' module structures. Students wishing to enrol on the module need to obtain the signature of their personal tutor before being accepted onto the module.

How is the module assessed?

All students are required to submit a portfolio based on their work experience. Those studying the 15, 20 and 30-credit modules also have to do a 10-minute presentation. For both the 20 and 30 credit modules, students are required to write a CV and supporting statement for a job application. The 30-credit module additionally requires students to produce a 4000-word reflective essay based on an aspect of their work experience, the title of which must be approved by their personal tutor as well as the IWE module lecturer.

The student in question has not, as part of his/her programme of study, undertaken any similar module incorporating a work placement and containing a reflective component (ie there will be no duplication of material for the same award)

The student in question is capable of undertaking the module and fulfilling its requirements (ie the module will not conflict with other commitments on the student's degree programme).

Undertaking the IWE module will not exceed the number of modules/credits required for that year's study.

Music and your CV

Music can provide very specific examples of skills sought by employers. The Director of Music's Office is happy to write references for any students involved in Music, but there are also more formal ways of evidencing your experience and skills acquired while you are at University here.

Exeter Award

Launching this year, this is an excellent scheme to mark students' achievements in extra-curricular activities in an official way. If you are involved in Music activities, you will probably already be more than halfway to completing it!

Independent Work Experience Module

For those wishing to further develop their skills, perhaps with a view to a career in Arts Administration, work placements are available in the Director of Music’s Office through the IWE scheme.

Careers in Music

Some of the Lectures given during the year are to do with careers in Music or Music-related areas. Publicity, Arts Administration, Orchestral Management and Events management are some of the areas covered which you can put directly into practice whilst still at University.

ePDP

Students often use their personal tutor as a reference for job applications, but find that he/she has no knowlege of Students Guild/Music activities that employers find important. Keeping a record of your acheivements through the ePDP tools found on your student portal give your personal tutor access to much more infomation.

Sports Scholarships

(Exeter and Cornwall campuses)
Exeter is proud of its high quality reputation that matches its whole hearted commitment to delivering sporting excellence. Sports Scholars play a key role in maintaining these high standards of achievement; they compete successfully in several of the sports teams that form part of the University High Performance Programme. On average, over 30 Scholarships are awarded each year.

Sports Scholarships are available to undergraduate and postgraduate applicants as well as current students. Candidates must be of outstanding sporting ability who show evidence of achievement or potential at national level. They are only offered to students who have gained an offer of a place or normal admission to a course based on their academic qualifications. However, it is not necessary to wait for an offer of a place before submitting your application form. No special reduction in entry criteria is offered as part of the scholarship, nor does the offer of a scholarship carry with it an offer of a place. There is no support offered through the Sports Scholarship Scheme to help finance course, tuition or international fees.

Scholarships are awarded on a yearly basis and can be renewable for up to a further two years, subject to satisfactory sporting performance, academic progress and general conduct. The scholar will be assessed at the end of each year and they will have to apply for re-nomination for an award.

The University will make every effort to accommodate your training and performance needs however, no dispensation is offered from the normal course requirements in terms of assessment, progression or final degree classification.

Awards
There are a number of awards available to applicants:

Sports Scholarships will be tailored to the needs of the individual but will include a cash sum for sporting expenses/discounted accommodation costs from £500 up to a maximum of £1,000 and for exceptional athletes, this can rise to £2,000. A full package of support services equating to a cash equivalent of £500 is also provided.

In the main, the Sports Scholarship Scheme is funded centrally by the University High Performance Programme. However, several partners and local and national sponsors also show great generosity by financing several individual scholarships and bursaries.

There are also sports-specific bursaries available:

In Golf, Exeter is one of only 6 institutions in the UK to be awarded an educational development grant from the Royal & Ancient to help Exeter administer a performance programme for elite student golfers. Men wishing to apply should have a handicap of scratch or better and women 4 or better.

In Men’s Rugby, opportunities exist for undergraduates and postgraduates to apply to the University's Rugby Bursary Programme run in partnership with Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club and kindly supported by the South West Communications Group.

Further Information
Full details of all of these awards and access to application forms can be found by visiting the Sports Scholarships website or you can access and complete the online application form at the link below (under 'How do you apply?').

Who Can Apply?
Performers from any sport recognised by the University Athletic Union will be considered, but emphasis is placed on the following High Performance Target Sports:

Cricket
Golf
Hockey
Rugby
Sailing
Tennis
However, outstanding performers from any sport will be considered.

All of these sports mentioned above have nationally recognised reputations for competition and excellence at Exeter, along with first-class sports-specific training facilities including:

3rd generation floodlit rubber crumb training facility
Cricket specific indoor and outdoor training facilities with confirmed plans to build a new £2million indoor cricket school for 2008

Every scholar must be a student at the University of Exeter and compete for the University in BUSA events. You will be allocated a performance mentor with whom ‘Professional and Athlete Life Skills’ can be discussed and an annual programme of training and competition agreed. Each scholar is also assigned an academic tutor to help with their studies and academic progress.

How do you apply?
The submission of the Application Form needs to be undertaken by the 31st January each year. Late applications may be considered after consultation with the Sports Performance Manager, in order to avoid disappointing any potential sports stars. Late applicants are advised to contact the Sports Performance Manager as soon as possible. The Scholarship Panel will assess all the application forms and invite those successful athletes to formally apply to the second stage of the scheme’s application process.

Second stage applications are generally required by the end of March of any given year prior to arrival in the autumn of that same year. The Scholarship Panel will then meet in May to discuss and decide upon successful scholarship awards. You will be notified by the end of May as to whether your application has been successful. If successful, you will be assigned a level of award and notified on what you will need to do next.
